Principal Systems Engineer, UAS New Products and Technologies (6349)
Tracking Code 6349 This is a Senior Systems Engineering position. The employee will be working with the UAS New Products and Technologies Group to evaluate technologies and/or develop new systems designs for application to government developmental programs and Internal Research and Development (IRAD) programs for new unmanned aircraft systems. Primary responsibility will be to provide technical oversight for STOL, V/STOL and VTOL platform development using new and/or emerging technologies that can lead to runway and launcher independent flight operations of unmanned aircraft systems. The employee will develop top-level conceptual designs from basic engineering and technical data for new and emerging technologies and will conduct preliminary structural and performance analyses to ascertain viability of new technologies for use in unmanned aircraft systems. Position requires coordination and oversight of personnel and capitol resources for design, analysis, fabrication, ground testing and flight testing of technology demonstrator vehicles and payload systems. Ability to assess technology viability of new and emerging technologies to UAS applications. Ability to assess potential new business opportunities and develop technical alternatives, RFI responses and RFP responses (Proposals). Collaboration skills are essential. Rotorcraft expertise is highly desirable. * Design experience with full-sale manned composite rotor blades * Design experience with Mach-scaled wind-tunnel model rotor systems * Piston and turbine drive system design experience * Small-engine propulsion system design * Helicopter transmission system design * Helicopter control system design * Bearingless rotor hub design * Rotor loads prediction methods * Airplane high-lift system design * Aircraft and helicopter performance analysis * UAV system design experience a plus * Must be a U.S. citizen with the ability to obtain/maintain a government security clearance. Required Experience Design experience with mach-scaled wind tunnel rotor and drive systems, scaled rotor design, helicopter performance predictions, airframe aerodynamic design, experience with CAMRAD, Myklestad similar aeroelastic codes helpful, familiar with composite design details, UAV design and development experience is a plus. Experience dealing with technical contacts at Government labs is a plus. In addition to the required experience, some background and experience in the following areas are highly desirable discriminating factors: * Modern comprehensive rotorcraft codes such as CAMRAD, Copter, 2GCHAS, DYMORE and similar * Myklestad frequency and modes analysis * Ducted propulsor (fans and propellers) aerodynamic design * STOL and V/STOL systems design, development and/or testing * Experience with propulsive-lift concepts * Familiarity with aircraft avionics systems * Ability to use “rule-of-thumb” design characteristics and historical trend data to conduct first-look evaluations of new aircraft concepts or designs a plus * Familiarity with lighter-than-air vehicles, especially blimps and/or dirigibles We Value Diversity!
