Patient Access (PASC)

Full time 80 (Two week Payperiod)


Pay Grade 020 (Minimum hourly rate $16.49/hr)

High School/GED

This is a multi-faceted role within Pre-Arrival Services Center (PASC) and outpatient departments. The Specialist is responsible for obtaining and verifying the accuracy of insurance authorizations, the exact recording of diagnosis codes, timely charge posting to support accurate billing, and point of service collections. Resolves failed medical necessity concerns, regulatory compliance questions, and billing issues with clinical staff. Identifies patients without adequate insurance coverage and coordinates financial counseling. Performs scheduling and/or place orders for patient testing. Provides cross-coverage for scheduling and front office functions, including registrations necessary for the efficient day-to-day operation of the facility. The Specialist serves as liaison between customers, insurance carries and the department. Provides oversight and training for Schedulers and/or Registrars.

Minimum Education and Experience:




High School Diploma or GED

Specialized training in accounting principles, medical coding, medical terminology


2 years of medical office/ insurance clerical experience; prior experience with CPT and ICD-9/ICD-10 coding.

3+ years of medical office/ insurance experience, with administrative billing functions, health information systems

Computer/Software Knowledge:

Typing 30 wpm

Basic computer literacy (Word, Excel); coding and/or insurance billing software

EMR systems



Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Billing and Coding Specialist Certification (CBCS) or Certified Coding Specialist – Physician Practice (CCS-P)

Special Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities:

  • Knowledge of medical insurance, billing and scheduling
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Ability to effectively communicate – both written and oral
  • Must demonstrate good work ethics
  • Good organizational skills
  • Problem solving skills
  • Ability to exemplify, reinforce and model good customer service and teamwork behavior
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team in a fast paced environment
  • Ability to maintain high level of confidentiality; follow HIPPA guidelines
  • Must be proficient in reading, writing, and speaking English
