Symetra is looking for a Benefit Tax Specialist to join our team!   

  • Provide support for the daily/weekly/monthly/quarterly/annual reconciliations of FICA, SIT, FIT leveraging advanced tax administration/accounting savviness; participate in testing and development of the Life & Disablity claims system to ensure it is processing benefits correctly and following all tax guidelines and rules
  • Provide support to the claims teams by being the contact for trouble-shooting issues in the claim system that may arise during the payment cycle of disability benefits
  • Review overpayments to ensure accuracy and provide guidance to the claims teams regarding recovery efforts
  • Communicate on a professional, comprehensive, and accurate basis with key external customers including policyholder, brokers, and vendors concerning tax administration issues.
  • Collaborate with key departments (e.g., Treasury, Finance, Tax, Compliance, Claims, IT, etc.) through pro-active communication to ensure maximum efficiency and coordination.
  • Collaborate with various internal departments and external vendors to create, carefully review, and disseminate tax records, financial reporting, and other supporting documentation to ensure that Symetra effectively and efficiently provides accurate benefit/tax services needed to remain fully compliant with our qualitative and regulatory responsibilities.
  • Oversee vendor relationship (e.g., OneSource, subrogation, etc.) and its associated administration to ensure service promised are delivered consistent with Symetra's expectations and that Symetra is paying a competitive marketplace fee.
  • Ensure that Symetra remains in full compliance with its tax reporting (including W-2s, 1099s, etc.) and administration duties (e.g., timely, accurate, customer-focused.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed historical and current records in full accordance with company accounting policies, as well as to meet IRS requirements.
  • Closely monitor local/county/state/federal updates of tax administration issues that may impact LAD products and initiate actions to ensure management is informed and well-prepared to address those issues on a timely basis.
  • Provide timely and accurate data to the Financial Reporting Unit (FRU) and the Tax Department to support financial and tax reporting for the Benefits Division (LAD and CI)
  • Provide customer-focused consultation for new policyholders, claimants, TPA services, etc. for Symetra's Life & Disability and Critical Illness products
  • Successfully complete assorted projects assigned.
  • Actively demonstrate pro-active process improvement relevant to benefit/tax administration services that will enhance the external and the internal customer experience.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in Accounting or Taxation/Tax Administration from an accredited college or university
  • Three (3)+ years of tax administration work experience or group benefit administration duties
  • Experience with researching IRS treatment of third-party sick pay
  • Simultaneous multi-tasking
  • Ability to work in fast paced environment -- particularly leading up to and during tax season
  • Excellent customer service and collaboration skills required
  • Works efficiently and effectively with minimal supervision and proactively takes it upon oneself to fix issues as they arise
  • Ability to work independently and as a part of a team
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Internet navigation, comfort with assorted commercial application programs
  • Advanced Excel skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and negotiation skills
  • Serve as subject matter expert on tax-related topics
  • Conduct research necessary to solve problems and/or provide defensible answers
  • Negotiate with vendors to achieve the best possible customer-oriented outcomes
  • Partner with other business functions within the company to ensure timely, accurate, and customer-focused work product.
